Schools enjoy Hinckley RFC Tag Rugby Festival 2009

June 22nd, 2009

Friday 18th June 2009

The Hinckley RFC Tag Rugby Festival took place at Grove Road, Burbage on Friday 19th June 2009. The top year 5 & 6 primary school teams from this season’s Hinckley RFC Community Tag Rugby programme contested the finals for the Electricity Alliance Trophy, cheered on by enthusiastic family and friends.

All Saints, Sapcote played some superb running rugby throughout the festival to retain the trophy they won last year. Their pace in attack and the tightest defence in the competition proved a formidable combination. They won 3 matches and drew against Weavers Close.

A delighted captain Joe Tuffin was presented with the Electricity Alliance trophy by Fergus Campbell, who said “It’s a pleasure to see so many kids enjoying their rugby and I’ve been really impressed with the standard of rugby tonight”.

Burbage Junior School started off slowly with a defeat against All Saints, but came back well to win all their remaining games and finish only a point behind All Saints behind to retain the Electricity Alliance Plate.

Weavers Close came a creditable 3rd and were the only team to take points off the eventual winners with 1 win, 2 draws and 1 defeat. Sketchley Hill came 4th with 1 win, 1 draw and 2 defeats. They also showed great sportsmanship in lending Burbage a player as they were a man down. Richmond came 5th, but competed well and never gave up right to the end.

Hinckley RFC would like to thank our sponsors the Electricity Alliance and parent companies Balfour Beatty and National Grid for their continued support of youth rugby in the region. Their support has allowed us to introduce rugby to thousands of local primary schools.

This season our Community programme has also extended into High Schools as we have kicked off our girls rugby programme in association with O’Hanlon & Skinner.

Thanks to our referees Lee Collings, Mick Steele, Andy Houghton and Neil Castle, to Matt O’Hanlon for his help with registration and organisation of the event and to Mark Wilkin, our club photographer on the day.
